I haven’t been a fan of the Mission Impossible movies thus far. From the original ‘96 Brian De Palma film, the John Woo 2000 effort and finally the J.J. Abrams ’06 version, none have really grabbed me if I’m honest, probably the John Woo film was the worst.
Now don’t get me wrong, I loved the TV series, I’m too young to remember it first time round but growing up BBC2 in the UK used to show it on repeat and I’d watch, it was great.
This movie seemed to be different from the others from the trailer, it’s taken me a while to get round to watching it but I’m not disappointed that I did.
I was slightly regretting the decision when the first screen arrived with ‘a Tom Cruise production’, still, I persevered.
Let’s get one thing straight from the get-go, this film is nothing without Simon Pegg. There’s a touch of comedy that runs throughout but he really adds the necessary gusto that the film requires.
Pegg steps up his involvement from the previous films and has a much more enhanced role that sees him being the ‘joker’ of the group but he is also equally adept at the more serious stuff as well.
I won’t say too much about the movie given that anything I say about the story would probably give stuff away.
I will say that to truly enjoy the film you need to suspend all belief as there’s a lot in the film that would make you go ‘oh come one!’. However, switch your brain off, enjoy Pegg and the action sequences and you have a pretty good movie.
Keep your belief though and the movie will tear you apart with the ‘coincidences’ and the ‘as if’ moments that are scattered throughout.
One such example is Tom Cruise climbing up the side of the world’s tallest building in Dubai. Now let’s dispense with the ‘magic gloves’ he’s using and let’s ask the question why, despite him climbing up glass…which are windows to apartments…no-one seems to alert the hotel in anyway…that there’s a man, 104 stories up, climbing outside their window…like I said, suspend belief and you have a good movie.
