Ice Age: Continental Drift Review

I have a bit of a soft spot for the Ice Age movies; they are my guilty pleasure if you like. Most of this is down to Scrat and his adventures with acorns and Sid, expertly voiced by John Leguizamo.

That said, I wasn’t that excited about the prospect of a fourth movie, I wasn’t sure it would have the legs to carry it this far.

Sadly I was right on this occasion. This is probably the weakest of the Ice Age movies, which is a shame.

The story is of the changing and creating of the continents which splits Manny, Diego and Sid from the rest of the pack. They than have to go through a series of adventures, mainly fighting a bunch of pirates led by Captain Gutt.

It’s Captain Gutt that is the weakest part of the story, for me it just doesn’t really fit with the rest of the series or even with this movie that much.

There’s also a moral style story involving Manny’s now teenager-esq daughter who has a crush on another mammoth and shuns her best friend because of it.

Jennifer Lopez makes an appearance as Shira another Sabertooth looking animal but it’s a bit of a weak character.

Looking through the cast it feels a lot like the producers concentrated far too much on the celebrities they could get in for the voices: Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, J-Lo, Nicki Minaj, Seann William Scott, Patrick Stewart etc rather than concentrating on making the movie as good as the others.

Sid keeps the movie ticking along with his usual antics and the introduction of a second sloth with Sid’s Granny turning up, very well voiced by Wanda Sykes, and the brief introduction of some cute little…er…things…does what it needs to in adding some laughs to this otherwise pretty flat Ice Age movie.
