So far I haven’t been a huge fan of Ben Affleck’s movies, I haven’t seen them all but the ones I’ve seen didn’t set me on fire. So it was with some trepidation that I went into the watching of his latest, Argo.

Argo is based on a true story, unknown how much artistic licence has been taken and where, about the saving of six American hostages from Iran by the CIA. They decide to get the hostages out by posing as a Canadian film crew location scouting for an alien based movie, the titular Argo.

The movie is a triumph, from the acting, Scoot McNairy who I last saw in Killing Them Softly, Alan Arkin and John Goodman, who I last spoke about in Flight, raising the question once again why he isn’t in more movies these days, to the direction which is perfect for the movie. I suppose I should mention Affleck but his performance didn’t really grab me, he strikes me as one of those actors who’s always the same whatever the role, maybe that’s just me though.

You would think the story made-up if you didn’t know the background, it’s something straight out of Hollywood and the Goodman-Arkin double act at the start of the film is a sideways swipe at Hollywood and its ways.

You must stick around at the end of the movie to see how closely the production company came to reproducing the environment and the actors and actresses from the original hostage crisis. They have gone to a great deal of trouble to make everything just right, as far as they could anyway.

This is a great movie, it is gripping, funny, sad and shocking all in one and Affleck handles it all well as does the writer Chris Terrio.
